Professional Profile

Dr. Sergio Muwowo is a Zambian Consultant Pathologist and Neuropathologist with extensive experience in diagnostic pathology, neuropathology, medical education, and postgraduate training. He is affiliated with the Cancer Diseases Hospital in Lusaka.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology (BSc HB), Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB), and Master of Medicine in Pathology (MMed Pathology) from the University of Zambia. He is also a Foundation Fellow of the Zambia College of Medicine and Surgery (ZACOMS).

Dr. Muwowo has pursued advanced training in Neuropathology through international clinical observerships and fellowship-based training at leading academic centres, including Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), Harvard Medical School, USA, and Stellenbosch University/Tygerberg Hospital, South Africa. This training has provided advanced exposure to the diagnostic evaluation of brain and spinal cord tumours, neurodegenerative diseases, cerebrovascular pathology, neuroinfectious diseases and other disorders of the central nervous system. His training has strengthened his expertise in integrating conventional histopathology with immunohistochemistry, molecular diagnostics and emerging digital pathology approaches, with a particular focus on translating international best practices into sustainable neuropathology services in Zambia and Africa.

Neurological Research Interests

Dr. Muwowo’s neurological interests span brain tumours, neurodegenerative diseases, neuroinfectious diseases, cerebrovascular disorders and epilepsy, with a particular interest in understanding the neuropathological and molecular mechanisms underlying neurological disease in African populations. His research seeks to bridge diagnostic neuropathology with molecular pathology, digital pathology, artificial intelligence and translational research, while addressing diseases that remain under-characterised in Africa. He is also interested in comparative neuropathology and the One Health approach, exploring the relationship between neurological diseases in humans and animals and developing collaborative platforms for innovative neuroscience research.
